Cambodia’s Parliament OK for Khmer Nationality Revocation
Phnom Penh (11 July 2025): The total of 125 members (100%) of the Cambodian National Assembly on Friday unanimously approved the country’s constitutional amendment bill on Article 33 about revocation on Cambodian citizenship.
The bill paves the way for the development of a legal framework for the revoke any Cambodian citizen who commits treason or acts in a manner that seriously harms the interests of Cambodia and its people in collusion with foreign countries.
According to the new-proposed amendment on Article 33 is “Cambodian citizens may not be deported or extradited to any foreign country, except by mutual agreement. Cambodian citizens living abroad are protected by the state. Acquisition and loss of Cambodian citizenship, including the revocation of Cambodian citizenship, shall be determined by law.”
The bill has been made after some Cambodian citizens who are living abroad, especially those who hold two nationalities, attack the Cambodia government facing border issue with Thailand. They look like they are with the Thai side, not Cambodia of their origins.
