Cambodia’s New International Airport to Replace the 60-Year-Old One in September 

Phnom Penh (23 May 2025): Cambodia’s US$1.5 billion-worth Techo International Airport is expected to operate on 9 September and officially launched on 20 October this year to replace the current Phnom Penh International Airport built and operated in 1955, according to the Secretariat of State for Civil Aviation of Cambodia on Friday.

With the area over 2,600 hectares, Techo International Airport is a modern and spacious airport where it is capable of accommodating large aircraft, including Airbus A380 and Boeing 747, and could be handling up to 13 million passengers per year in its first phase.

The investment under $1.5 billion is a public-private partnership project in which the State Secretariat for Civil Aviation has a 10% stake and 90% from partnership with Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC) . The construction is with 3 phases — Phase I (2020-2030), Phase II (2030-2050) and Phase III (2050 onwards).

Designed as a large-scale international airport classified as Class 4F, Techo International Airport  will completely replace the current Phnom Penh International Airport known as Pochentong Airport operated since 1960s.

Phnom Penh International Airport built on an area of 366.72 hectares will be permanently closed and Prime Minister Hun Manet has said his Royal Government would develop the area for the public interests as much as possible. (Chhay Sophal)
