Phnom Penh: Opposition Party Leader Sam Rainsy on Monday denies the results of the Sunday elections saying that it had lot of irregular cases and urges the National Election Committee for proper investigation.

Speaking in a press conference today Sam Rainsy, the President of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), said the election was worst ever. Last night, CNRP issued a statement to appeal its supporters to stay calm, avoid any violence or provoke problem, and wait for the official results.

According to preliminary result claimed by Minister of Information and government spokesperson Khieu Kanharith, CPP gets 68 seats and CNRP gets 55 seats out of the 123 parliamentary seats.

Speaking at a press conference at 5:20 pm on Sunday, ADHOC President Thun Saray confirmed that there have been 200 cases of irregularity nationwide — mainly in Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Siem Reap, Prey Veng, and Svay Rieng –  and one case of violence due to a confrontation between military police forces and unhappy voters in Phnom Penh. One police van was damaged.

Last Saturday, Adhoc President Thun Saray said that the Civil Society Alliance expressed concerned over the ink imported from India as it is removable while COMFREL Executive Director Koul Panha was also saying that irregularity could happen since some voters have their same names in different voting lists and stations while the number of printed ballot papers is more 27% than the total 9.675.453 voters. He said the duplicated names have been in the provinces where the number of the parliament seats is higher.

Koul Panha also said that about 69% of the voters got turnout for the Sunday votes, that is lower than the 2008 — about 75%.

Earlier, one of the tops Generals of the Ministry of Interior told Cambodia News that the national police and military police forces have been ordered to stay at their respective bases on duty and ready to take action against any protest annoyed the establishment of the new parliament.

“As the armed forces who serve the nation under the motto of Nation, Religion and King, we have to stay neutrally and respect the results of the election organised by the National Election Committee,” he said. Neang/Cambodia News
