Cambodia gains more supports from EU and UK for membership of UN Council

Phnom Penh (9 Feb, 2012): Cambodia has gained more supports from ambassadors of the European Union and the United Kingdom who pledged to back Cambodia’s campaign for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council .

Koy Koung, spokesman of Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told reporters that during separate meetings with newly-appointed British Ambassador Mark Gooding and European Union Ambassador Jean-Francois Cautain on Wednesday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong sought and received their supports to vote Cambodia in an election to be held during the 67th Session of the General Assembly later this year with all 192 UN member countries eligible to vote.

UN Security Council comprises five permanent members – China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States. While the Council has ten non-permanent members — each serving a two-year term — Cambodia is seeking election for a non-permanent seat allocated to the Asia regional group for the two-year period running from January 2013 to December 2014.

According to the a webpage of the Cambodian embassy to UK,  If elected to the UN Security Council, Cambodia undertakes to serve in the best interests of all member nations, carrying out its duties and responsibilities in the spirit of transparency, partnership and universality.
