“I’m Brad Pitt and I’m a drug addict,” the 48-year-old actor laughed as he told the audience of a Los Angeles screening of “The House I Live In,” a documentary about the United States’ war on drugs.

Pitt was quick to clarify to the audience, saying “No, my drug days have long since past, but I could probably land in any American city in any state and get you whatever you wanted. I could find anything you’re looking for, give me 24 hours or so.”Ahead of the screening on Friday night (Pacific Time), both film maker Eugene Jarecki and Pitt spoke to the audience about the hypocrisy and flawed efforts of the US government in attempting to quash the illegal drugs trade.

“I know people are suffering because of it,” Pitt told the audience. “It’s such bad strategy. It makes no sense. It perpetuates itself. You make a bust, you drive up profit, which makes more people want to get into it,” he added. “To me, there’s no question; we have to rethink this policy and we have to rethink it now.”

Pitt joined the documentary as executive producer, alongside film maker Jarecki. According to the documentary, the United States’ war on drugs has cost more than $1 trillion and accounted for over 45 million arrests since 1971, preying largely on communities of the poor and minorities.
