Cambodia’s Local Products Increase After Thailand Closes Border
Phnom Penh (25 November 2025): Up to 70% of goods available in the current markets are the Cambodian goods while some are imported from Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries in the region, after the Kingdom has reduced imports of goods from Thailand since mid-July this year, according to a senor official of the Ministry of Commerce.
Penn Sovicheat, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, said that When Thailand gave up the opportunity to trade with Cambodia, it benefited Cambodia, local enterprises grew, and other countries in the region also benefited.
After the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand and the Cambodian people started to boycott Thai goods, the production of goods by local enterprises doubled, Sovicheat told reporters last Friday.
Oil and gas have been imported from Vietnam and Singapore after stopping imports from Thailand, while food and other consumer goods were imported from regional countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, while the Malaysian Embassy reported that its imports to Cambodia increased three times compared to before, he added.
He said that if we look at each essential item and the availability of new items on the market, it shows that the production of goods in Cambodia has increased significantly, from the production of small enterprises to large enterprises, producing quality goods and good packaging. Chhay Sophal
