Regional Editors Discuss Media Roles for Moderation in EAS Members

Petaling Java, Malaysia (4 December 2015): A group of senior media professionals in the region on Friday gathered here at the outskirt of Kuala Lampur to talk about their roles how to promote moderation membership of the East Asia Summit (EAS).
During the discussion in “The 4th ERIA Editors Roundtable – The ASEAN Community Post 2015 Vision” co-organised by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the Star Media Group of Malaysia, both panelists and participants raised their ideas similarly that media professionals and social media network must always moderate, stay in the middle line, and do good reports for everyone in term of politics and religions but not corruption, crimes, and terrorism.
They also urged authorities to define clear message of moderation for the public while extremists can easily spark into flame .
EAS – inaugurated in Kuala Lumpur on 14 December 2005 at the time of the rise of violence and brutality committed by terrorist bodies in Iraq and Syria – is a unique leaders’ forum in the Southeast Asia, East Asia and Asia-Pacific region for strategic dialogue and cooperation on key issues like regional peace, security and prosperity, political, security and economic issues of common regional concern.
So far, the EAS members are the 10-naton ASEAN countries — Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam — Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the United States and Russia.
Prof. Hidetoshi Nishimura, ERIA President, said at the event that it is great to have prominent editors and journalists from ASEAN and East Asia as they can have the unique opportunity to have a dialogue with ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh.
