Phnom Penh (3 Jan, 2014): At least 4 garment workers have been shot dead and about 10 others were seriously wounded during a clash between thousands of workers and military police on Friday, witnesses said.
Hundreds thousands of garment workers have protested since last week to demand their wage increase from US$80 to US$ US $160 per month. Although the government’s Ministry of Labour and factory owner agreed to increase to US$100 per month from February 2014, the workers do not agree and still need US$160.
While police are using AK47 rifles, the workers use stones, bottle with gasoline and sticks. Our reporters at the scene reported that the situation becomes worse.
